Foam Roof FAQ's

Foam Vs. Tar

Foam Roof Specifications

Homeowners & landlords alike are always looking for the best solution for their sometimes ongoing roof woes. When looking for these solutions, most owners get several estimates from different companies and will hear an array of negatives about each other. At SSFR, we would rather tout the incredible benefits of the SPF roof system rather than the problems of others. Here are several reasons an SPF roof system is far superior to other roofs:

1. Most would say that the INSULATION which an SPF roof system provides is the number one benefit. An SPF roof is the only roof system that will pay for itself. A household may save as much as 50% of their heating and air conditioning costs by applying an SPF roof system.

2. The SPF roof system is SEAMLESS. Water cannot penetrate the system because there are no sags and no seams for water to sit and work its way through. As well, this eliminates the need for additional pitch to the roof because the foam can be sprayed thicker in areas to promote drainage and can be sanded and shaped to make sure adequate drainage is achieved. An SPF system is truly the answer to the flat roof saga.

3. As the person responsible for your family, the condition of your home and the amount of time you really want to spend up on your roof, you should know the really important benefit of an SPF roof system. It’s PERMANENT! As long as you keep a cover of Elastomeric Acrylic paint on your SPF roof system, these roofs will last for generations to come.

4. An SPF roof system is
ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE in more ways than one! First, because it is a liquid, sprayed into a solid, there is no evaporation and is only toxic in its liquid form. The liquids are self contained and remain protected in a large truck, away from animals & humans. Second, because the SPF roof system is permanent, there will be no disposal of non-biodegradable materials to the landfill. When a tar & gravel roof or other conventional roof system is replaced, the old ones eventually have to be torn off and end up in a landfill, spending thousands; maybe millions of years before they disintegrate.

How is an SPF roof system applied?

There are several steps involved in building an SPF roof system. SSFR has been a pioneer in helping to develop these steps over the past 35 years. The steps noted here include all manufacturer specifications as well as some extras that SSFR believes to create the ultimate SPF roof system using the highest quality materials.

1. Removal of gravel or existing roof layers. Dependent upon the integrity of the existing roof surface, dry rot or the amount of existing roof layers these may be removed as well as gravel. All blisters or penetrations will be addressed during the preparation.

2. SSFR uses a bonderized metal foam stop (perimeter flashing) to ensure a permanent roof system. This bonderized metal has been etched with materials that will not degrade and do not require primer when painted.

3. All drains or scuppers are removed and replaced new. Downspouts may need to be replaced at additional cost. Ask your estimator to give you a free evaluation of your downspouts.

4. Breather vents may be used to allow gases to escape. (Used especially when other roof layers exist.)

5. SSFR uses a UV activated primer on the prepared roof surface. This is a lightly sprayed, black, acrylic paint which absorbs additional dust & debris as well as moisture.

6. 1.5” of SPF is applied to the entire prepared roof surface thus, creating a monolithic insulation blanket. Low areas will be filled and some areas will be sprayed thicker to promote drainage. Standing water cannot be eliminated from a flat roof however; SSFR can keep the standing water to a “bird bath” size, eliminating any weight issues from the roof.

7. 1.5 Gallons per 100 square feet of an elastomeric base coat is applied to the SPF surface.

8. 1.5 Gallons per 100 square feet of an elastomeric top coat is applied to the base coat. These coatings are specifically designed to eliminate Sun UV thus keeping the SPF roof system from burning. SSFR offers a choice of white, light gray & tan colors. White is the most reflective coating, keeping your roof even cooler in the summer. In addition to the top coat of paint, SSFR offers a granule that can be broadcast into the wet top coat at 35lbs. per 100 square feet giving the coating a more aesthetic look as well as a guard against tree limbs, animals & other objects causing penetrations.

9. The SSFR 15 year “no leak” warranty is standard with every SPF roof system. Please ask your SSFR estimator about our LIFETIME guarantee.

Note:
It is not illegal for a contractor to shave cost by not following the manufacturer recommendations so, this is why you'll find that sometimes the difference in price can be quite extreme. Be aware that spraying foam on your roof and creating a foam roof "system" are two very different things.
